Know When You Should End Your Relationship

It is often difficult to know when you should end your relationship.  It is never easy to go, after you have spent a certain time with somebody, be it for a few months or several years.    It is, however, essential to learn when you should end your relationship as it is often the best move to take for you both.

When you are love each other and certain problems come along, your first thought is to try and arrange matters and you are perfectly right to try.

Most relationships fail at this point because the couple makes no efforts to resolve their difficulties.    They give in too easily instead of sticking it out and making things work.   Had they made the effort, they would now be back living happily together.

There are also those people who spend their time going from one problem to another and keep battling on despite all advice to call it a day; they seem to just love suffering.  Their partner continues cheating on them and they take them back each time or their partner continually makes mistakes and leaves them with all the problems to sort out.

Clearly these people do not know when to end their relationship; in reality they are afraid of finding themselves alone or having to move on.

There are times that arise when you must get out of the relationship. If you feel unsafe with your partner or they treat incorrectly you should realize that it is time to end the relationship.  There are obvious situations that should tell you when to end your relationship and look for something new.

Other situations may occur where it is more difficult to decide the course of action you should take.   If you have been cheated on once, should go?   Many couples manage to get over such problems and exit, their relationship strengthened.

More often though, when you’ve been cheated on, you are too hurt to forgive and the person who has cheated loses heart because they feel guilty and they cannot accept living under continuous suspicion.

After there has been cheating it is always difficult to decide whether ending the relationship is the right course of action, or not.    Have an honest discussion with your partner about how they can expect tem to trust you again and whether they are likely to repeat it.    If you feel like cheating because you want to be with another person, what should you do?

These feelings are natural. You may imagine how it would be with someone else.  However, if this starts to be obsessive, it could well be that you’d be better off with someone else.

If you still in love with your partner and you’ve tried many different ways to work things out, you should stop and think seriously. Have you been trying hard enough and for a sufficiently long time? It is always difficult to pick the right time to end a relationship, but if, after all you have done, there is no progress, then now may be the time to move on elsewhere.

Thanks Joe Bisley for attempting to address this tricky question.

When should one really end a relationship? Should one leave at the first signs of cheating or abuse? Or should one carry on? If so, for how long?

These are not easy questions to address, and there is always some element of trial and error involved.

My take is that one should first seek amends, and if this doesn’t work then one should seriously consider terminating the relationship.

I know a lot of emotions are involved but one has to be strong enough to know when to call it a day.
